How does a Muslim choose between multiple fatwas concerning a single issue, what is the stance on following scholarly dispensations, and how can one discern the correct fatwa amidst this disagreement, especially for the common person?

The mufti (Islamic jurist capable of issuing fatwas) must possess knowledge and integrity. A knowledgeable Muslim refers disputed matters to the Qur’an and Sunnah, and acts upon what he finds most preponderant based on the evidence. As for the Muslim who is not knowledgeable, he should ask the people of knowledge and accept what they rule, following the most trustworthy and learned among them if their opinions differ. It is not permissible for him to seek out dispensations and follow his whims.
