What is the ruling on one who knowingly fabricates lies about the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, especially with the spread of fabricated stories and their circulation among people?

It is forbidden to narrate fabricated stories about the Prophet (peace be upon him), or to disseminate them, or to speak of them, except to clarify that they are fabricated; due to his (peace be upon him) saying: "Whoever intentionally fabricates a lie against me shall take his place in the Hellfire," and his saying: "Whoever narrates a حديث (narration) from me, knowing it to be a lie, is himself one of the liars." Lying about him is not like lying about anyone else, and whoever hears a lie must inform those who spread it of that.
