Whoever does so intentionally has been warned by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: "Whoever lies about me intentionally, let him take his seat in the Hellfire." And whoever narrates a that he believes to be a lie is one of the liars. Therefore, one must verify a hadith before disseminating it, and a Muslim should advise his brethren and alert them to the danger of spreading fabricated hadiths.
