The answer

Fasting is one of the pillars of Islam, and a Muslim must be patient with it and seek Allah's help. It is permissible to drink water or rinse the mouth for cooling. A fasting person must begin their day fasting. If they are unable to complete it and fear perishing or illness, they are permitted to break their fast, not merely based on a delusion, but after hardship has occurred. Whoever fears perishing from severe hunger or thirst may break their fast, due to Allah’s saying: "And do not kill yourselves" (Quran 4:29) and "And do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction" (Quran 2:195). The day on which one broke the fast must be made up, and repentance is required if the breaking of the fast occurred before the permissible hardship arose.
