Is expiation by fasting two consecutive months obligatory upon me for accidentally killing a Hindu, given that I paid the blood money, and the differing fatwas of the shaykhs?

If someone accidentally kills a non-Muslim whose life is protected, such as a Dhimmi, a person under a treaty, or a المستأمن (a person granted safe conduct), then blood money (Diyya) is due by consensus. The majority of jurists also hold that expiation (Kaffarah) is required, which consists of fasting for two consecutive months for whoever cannot find a slave to free. The noble verse explicitly states this: "And if he was from a people with whom you have a treaty, then a Diyya is to be paid to his family and the freeing of a believing slave. And whoever does not find [one] – then a fast of two consecutive months as repentance to Allah. And Allah is ever Knowing and Wise."
