What is the authenticity of the following adhkar (supplications/remembrances): "Bismillah Al-Rahman Al-Rahim (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful)" 100 times, "Astaghfirullah Al-Atheem huwa Al-Tawwab Al-Rahim (I seek forgiveness from Allah, the Magnificent, He is the Acceptor of Repentance, the Most Merciful)" 100 times, "La ilaha illa Allah (There is no god but Allah)" 100 times, "Ya Daim (O Ever-Enduring)" 300 times, "Allahumma Salli ala Sayyidina Muhammadin wa alihi wa Sallim (O Allah, send prayers upon our Master Muhammad and his family and grant them peace)" 100 times? And do they have a basis in the Sunnah? If they do not have a basis in the Sunnah, are they haram (forbidden) or makruh (disliked)?

The numbers mentioned in the adhkar (remembrances) are, in some cases, based on weak narrations, and in others, have no basis whatsoever. Dhikr is of two types: that which is restricted to a specific number, authentically narrated from the Prophet, and that which is unrestricted, not tied to any number. It is not permissible to adhere to a specific number for which no limitation has been authentically reported. For instance, saying "Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim" (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful) one hundred times has not been reported, nor has the formula "Astaghfirullah Al-Azim huwal Tawwabur Rahim" (I seek forgiveness from Allah, the Almighty, He is the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful). As for "La ilaha illa Allah" (There is no god but Allah) one hundred times, it has been reported in a very weak hadith. Repeating "Ya Da'im" (O Ever-Enduring) 300 times has no basis, and "Al-Da'im" (The Ever-Enduring) is not among the Beautiful Names of Allah. One should not adhere to numbers that are not authentically reported or established. However, there is no harm in uttering such dhikr once or twice as part of general remembrance of Allah. What has been reported from the Prophet is sufficient and renders other forms unnecessary.
