The answer

It is better not to sever the head of the animal until it dies, and the scholars have disliked cutting off any limb from it before its soul departs. Despite this dislike, severing the head after slaughtering and before the soul departs does not prevent the permissibility of the slaughtered animal, as reported from Imam Ahmad, Ibn Umar, Ibn Abbas, and others, because the act of slaughter (dhakat) has already been fulfilled.
