What is the stance of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah regarding the differences that occurred among the Companions (such as Ali, Zubair, Talhah, Aisha, and Muawiyah)?
The stance of theSunnis regarding the disagreements that occurred among the Companions is that these were based on interpretation and (independent reasoning), and each of them believed they were in the right. As for those who erred among them, they still received a reward for their ijtihad, based on the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) saying: “If a judge makes a ruling, and he strives to reach the correct ruling and he gets it right, he will have two rewards. If he strives and he makes a mistake, he will have one reward.” Therefore, it is obligatory to remain silent about what transpired between them and not delve into it except out of necessity.
