The question

Why have scholars not striven to ascertain the justice of the Companions, contenting themselves with the assertion that they were all just, despite verses in the Qur’an mentioning hypocrites among them and the imposition of legal penalties upon some of them?

The answer

The imams of Islam and the hadith critics from among the Sunnis and the community have agreed upon the uprightness of the Companions and their exculpation from lying, for Allah Almighty has declared them upright in the Holy Quran, and His Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, has purified them, and the Muslims have unanimously agreed upon their uprightness. Slandering them is slandering the station of prophethood and messengership, and it leads to slandering the Holy Quran. As for the hypocrites and apostates, they are not included in this description.
