What is the ruling on abandoning prayer for reasons beyond one's control, and how can that be rectified?

Neglecting prayer is a grave sin, and whoever abandons it must repent and immediately make up for the missed prayers, according to the well-known opinion of the majority of scholars who do not consider the one who abandons prayer to be an apostate whose disbelief takes him out of the fold of Islam. As for those who consider the one who abandons prayer to be a disbeliever whose disbelief is major, he must offer sincere repentance, frequently seek forgiveness, and perform supererogatory prayers; he is not required to make up for the missed prayers. It is better for whoever abandoned prayer to start performing it immediately and repent to Allah, and if he makes up for what he missed, it is preferable as a way to resolve the difference of opinion.
