The answer

The husband should advise his misbehaving wife and remind her of the sin resulting from her words, and that he is the most deserving of her good treatment. This is based on the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) saying: "If I were to order anyone to prostrate to anyone, I would have ordered women to prostrate to their husbands, because of the rights Allah has given them over them." He should employ admonition, then abandonment in bed, then light striking. If these do not work, he should seek help from righteous members of her family. He should also explain to her the consequences of divorce and the harm it would inflict on the family. If she persists in her stubbornness, there is no sin in divorce when there is a need for it due to the wife's bad character. A balance must be struck between the harm of remaining with her and the harm of divorce to the children. Seeking divine guidance (Istikhara), supplication, and repentance to Allah are also recommended.
