The answer

Hypocrisy is of two types: major and minor. The major type expels one from the faith and relates to belief, such as concealing disbelief while feigning faith, or ridiculing the Sharia. The evidence for this is the Almighty's saying: "And if you ask them, they will surely say, 'We were only jesting and playing.' Say, 'Is it in Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?' Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after your belief. If We pardon a party of you, We will punish another party because they were criminals." As for the minor type, it does not expel one from the faith and is called practical hypocrisy, such as lying in speech, breaking a promise, and treachery. The evidence for this is the hadith: "Three traits, whoever possesses them is a hypocrite, even if he fasts, prays, and claims to be a Muslim: when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks it; and when entrusted, he betrays."
