Hypocrisy is the outward display of Islam while concealing disbelief.

The characteristics of hypocrites in Surat Al-Baqarah are: deceiving Allah and the believers, sickness of the heart, causing corruption on earth, describing believers as foolish, wavering, and mocking believers.

Their characteristics in Surat Al-Munafiqun are: swearing false oaths out of dissimulation, having their hearts sealed, large physiques and eloquence in speech, fear and panic, being judged as disobedient, and being deprived of guidance.

Their position in Hellfire: they will be in its lowest depths, as Allah the Almighty says: "Indeed, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire, and never will you find for them any helper." [An-Nisa: 145]

Their characteristics in the noble Hadith are: betrayal of trusts, lying in speech, treachery in covenants, and wickedness in disputes. This is indicated by the Hadith: "Four qualities, whoever has them is a pure hypocrite; and whoever has one of them, has a quality of hypocrisy until he abandons it: when entrusted, he betrays; when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a covenant, he acts treacherously; and when he disputes, he behaves wickedly." And the Hadith: "There are three characteristics, whoever possesses them is a hypocrite, even if he fasts and prays and claims to be a Muslim: when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks his promise; and when he is entrusted, he betrays."
