Does what is stated in the Torah's text regarding the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) and Passover (Chag HaPesach) indicate that the Jew mentioned in Ibn Abbas's hadith confused the two, and that the Prophet (peace be upon him) corrected this error, and accordingly, that the Day of Ashura is the Day of Atonement, as stated in Sahih Muslim: "It expiates the sins of the previous year"?

The Day of Ashura is the day Allah saved Musa (peace be upon him), so he fasted it in gratitude to Allah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) also fasted it and commanded its fasting, informing us that it expiates the sins of the past year. It was known to Quraysh in the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah) and they fasted it. The Prophet's (peace be upon him) question to the Jews about the Day of Ashura was to establish that he (the Prophet) had more right to Musa than they did, not to ascertain the reality of the day, because the Jews went astray in determining the Day of Ashura by calculating it according to the solar year, not the lunar year as is the case in Islam. Muslims fast the tenth day of the first month (Muharram), and it has no connection to the Jewish Day of Atonement.
