The question

How can we reconcile the narrations that indicate the fasting of Ashura in Mecca before the Hijra, and the narrations that indicate its fasting was after the Hijra due to aligning with the Jews in their veneration of it?

The answer

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saw the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura. They said: "It is the day Allah saved Moses and his people from their enemy, so Moses fasted it in gratitude to Allah." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then said: "I am more worthy of Moses than you," so he fasted it and commanded its observance. The Quraysh used to fast Ashura in the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah), and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, also used to fast it. There is no contradiction between the two narrations, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, fasted it before his emigration (Hijra), and the Jewish fasting of it coincided with his practice after the Hijra.
