The jurists have agreed on the prohibition of touching the Mus'haf (Qur'an) directly without a barrier for one who is in a state of minor ritual impurity (muhdith), based on the Almighty's saying: "None touch it except the purified," and Amr ibn Hazm's hadith: "That no one should touch the Qur'an except one who is pure." They differed regarding touching it with a barrier: some absolutely prohibited it (Malikis and Shafi'is), while others permitted it with a separate barrier (Hanbalis and Hanafis), such as a sleeve or a case, provided it does not accompany the Mus'haf when sold.

Regarding touching a non-mahram woman (ajnabiyyah), the fundamental principle is its absolute prohibition. However, some scholars - like the Shafi'is - permitted it on the condition that there is no temptation (fitna) and a barrier exists. The barrier is considered valid if it is thick enough to prevent the sensation of warmth, meaning it should not be thin to allow warmth to pass through. Jurists have differed on whether touching a woman with a thin barrier that does not prevent the sensation of warmth nullifies ablution (wudu').
