The answer

It is permissible for a man to associate with men or for a woman to associate with women, provided that no sin results from it. It may even be desirable if it is for cooperation in establishing the Sunnah and supporting the religion. However, a man associating with a woman or vice-versa with the intention of taking a girlfriend or a lover is forbidden by Islamic law and is considered an abomination. Allah the Almighty has forbidden both men and women from taking khiddan (friends of the opposite sex in an intimate way), and He has forbidden being in seclusion with a non-mahram woman, because Satan becomes the third party.
