The question

What is the criterion by which a woman can ascertain that the discharge she finds is maniyy (sperm/seminal fluid) necessitating ghusl (ritual bath)? And is ghusl obligatory if the maniyy does not reach the clothes? And is wudu' (ablution) required to be renewed when the time for Asr prayer enters, if one had performed wudu' earlier to touch the Mushaf (Qur'an)? And is wudu' alone sufficient in the case of madhiy (pre-seminal fluid) discharge?

The answer

If semen, with its distinguishing characteristics, is discharged, then ghusl (ritual bath) becomes obligatory. Ghusl is not required merely due to doubt about whether it is semen. In such a case, the woman has the choice regarding what she doubts about, and she can make it take the ruling of one of the two possibilities. Ordinary vaginal discharge (vaginal moisture) is considered pure according to the most authoritative opinion, but it invalidates ablution. If ablution is invalidated due to this discharge before the Asr prayer, it must be renewed. If the woman suffers from incontinence of this moisture, she should perform ablution for each prayer after its time has entered, and she is permitted to pray both obligatory and supererogatory prayers with this ablution. As for pre-seminal fluid (madhy), it necessitates purifying whatever it has touched on the body and clothes, and performing ablution, but it does not necessitate ghusl.
