Is it considered artificiality and pretense for a person to appear kind and calm to people while being sharp-tempered and emotional with their family? And is a person with a nervous disposition, who cannot control their temper at home, excused, while appearing well-mannered outside the home?

Family and relatives are the most deserving of good character and benevolence. Honoring one's parents and maintaining kinship ties are among the most obligatory rights. Showing kindness to relatives is better than showing kindness to others, for charity given to them is both charity and a strengthening of ties. A person is praised for being overlook-ful with their family and for being cautious and courageous with others. Being overlook-ful means being oblivious to the details of what has gone or remained of one's wealth, while courage means acting like a lion when interacting with people or in war. Forbearance and suppressing anger with people are desirable, but relatives are more deserving of all goodness, gentleness, and favor. Suppressing anger for someone who is quick to anger is a praiseworthy effort, and Allah has praised those who suppress anger and pardon people.
