Is the soul responsible for its actions in the grave, and is a person punished in both body and soul for their deeds inside their grave?

The torment and blessing of the grave are established by the Quran, Sunnah, and the consensus of the Salaf (pious predecessors), and they apply to both the soul and the body together. The fundamental principle is that the torment and blessing befall the soul, and the soul may connect with the body, causing the body to experience a part of them. Prophetic traditions have explicitly stated that the soul is returned to the body in the grave, and thus it feels the torment or blessing, such as the hadith of Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib, which mentions the grave's embrace of the disbeliever and the disjoining of his ribs. Furthermore, souls remain after departing the body, either in bliss or torment, and the soul alone may experience bliss in Paradise.
