What is the ruling on a young man afflicted with irritable bowel syndrome, who suffers from continuous flatulence, severe sweating, and dry mouth, going to Friday prayers in the mosque?

If the flatulence stops for a period sufficient for purification and prayer, then one must wait for this time to pray with a valid purification. However, if the flatulence does not stop for a time sufficient for both ablution and prayer, then one should perform ablution after the prayer time begins and pray the obligatory and supererogatory prayers, and the emission of flatulence will not harm him.

If the emission of gases is not continuous, the majority of scholars hold that it is not considered سلس ( سلس is a continuous discharge, like incontinence). However, some Hanbalis preferred the view that intermittent cessation has the ruling of سلس.

If the emission of flatulence stops by sitting, then one must sit during prayer.

It is not permissible to attend the mosque for Friday prayer or congregational prayers if the emission of flatulence harms those praying next to you. The reward for attendance will be written for you if Allah knows your sincerity, eagerness, and your preventing harm to Muslims.
