Does dry cupping break a Muslim's fast?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Wet cupping (hijama) or scarification cupping, which relies on extracting 'bad' blood, breaks the fast of a fasting person. This is the preferred view among the Hanbalis and some scholars, who cite the Hadith: "The one who performs cupping and the one for whom it is performed have broken their fast." They rationalize this by the weakening effect it has on the fasting person. As for dry cupping, it does not break the fast of a fasting person, as no blood is extracted, and thus the reason for breaking the fast is absent. Scholars have explicitly stated that cupping from which no blood emerges does not invalidate the fast.
