Is it permissible to wipe over socks that have many very small holes, seeing that they are designed in this manner?

Al-Shafi'i and Ahmad are of the opinion that it is not permissible to wipe over socks if the obligatory part of the foot becomes visible due to tears. Abu Hanifa and Malik, however, differentiated between minor and major tears. Ibn Uthaymeen preferred the permissibility of wiping over a torn or thin leather slipper (khuff) or sock, because there is no evidence to stipulate the absence of a tear or slit, and the principle is ease. Al-Thawri preceded him in this view. As a precautionary measure, it is better to adopt the opinion of the majority, which prohibits wiping over torn socks, but there is no blame on one who adopts the other opinion.
