Modesty (Hayaa’) is part of faith and one of the most important characteristics of believers. It is an Islamic virtue. Women, by their nature, are more in need of this virtue than men. Modesty in women prevents them from ostentatious display (tabarruj) and suspicious mixing with men, and it compels them to cover themselves and be chaste.

Modesty does not prevent a woman from seeking truth or acquiring beneficial knowledge, including medicine, especially concerning the treatment of women. If a woman studies medicine while adhering to Islamic regulations, then her seeing and hearing about 'awraat (private parts) to the extent required for her studies does not weaken her modesty. Modesty is weakened by committing sins, and it strengthens or weakens according to the righteousness or corruption of the heart.
