Is it obligatory for someone who broke their fast in Ramadan of 2012 to make it up, due to their ignorance of the rulings on making up missed fasts?

Whoever intentionally breaks their fast on a day in Ramadan is sinful and must hasten to repent and make up for it (qada'). If the fast was broken due to a legitimate excuse, there is no sin, but they must still make up for it. Whoever abandons the Ramadan fast without a legitimate legal excuse has disobeyed Allah and His Messenger and committed a grave sin. They must repent and make up for it (qada'), along with feeding a poor person for each day if they are able; otherwise, they must make up for it and repent. As for whoever breaks their fast due to illness or travel, they must make it up (qada') once the excuse is no longer present. No expiation (fidya) is required for delaying the make-up if the person was unaware of its obligation.
