The answer

If a person breaks their fast in Ramadan due to a legitimate Shar'i (Islamic legal) excuse, they are obligated to make up the missed days by scholarly consensus, based on the Almighty’s saying: "And whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days." As for one who intentionally abandons fasting without an excuse, they have committed a major sin, and repentance is obligatory upon them. The majority of scholars are of the opinion that making up the fast is obligatory for them, and this is the most preponderant view, because fasting is a debt upon them that is not discharged except by fulfilling it. Some scholars, however, held the view that making up the fast is not obligatory, because its time has passed and it will not be accepted from them.
