The question

How can I ponder the meanings of the Qur’an and adhkar and be present in mind during recitation, despite my limited knowledge of tafsir? Should I strive to understand, or should I stop until I ask and learn, fearing error? And should I recall meanings that come to my mind even if I have not read them from a reliable source or heard them from a scholar?

The answer

Deliberation and understanding when reading the Quran and performing dhikr (remembrance of Allah) are required, as Allah Almighty says: " [This is] a Book which We have sent down to you, full of blessing, that they may ponder over its verses, and that men of understanding may take heed." (38:29). Thus, reading with deliberation and humility is the aim, and through it, breasts are expanded and hearts are illuminated. Allah has indeed criticized those who do not ponder over the Quran. Among what helps one achieve mental presence is freeing the heart from worldly distractions, and seeking times when the heart is closer to humility, such as after Fajr prayer and in the depths of the night.
