The question

Is it permissible for a wife to refuse to visit her husband’s mother, who harms her, while her husband insists on it as a condition for the continuation of their marriage? Is she sinful for refusing, and what should she do about her husband’s insistence and his withholding of maintenance from her and her son? What is the punishment for the husband and his mother in the sight of Allah?

The answer

It is not the husband's right to force his wife to visit his mother, especially if harm results from the visit. Nor is it permissible for the husband's mother to strike the wife. If the husband strikes his wife unjustly, he is an oppressor, and he is not permitted to withhold financial support from her because she refused to visit his mother. If he does so, he is sinful, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "It is sufficient sin for a person to withhold sustenance from those whose provision he controls." The wife should try to reach an understanding with her husband and seek the mediation of righteous people. If that does not work, then an arbiter from his family and an arbiter from her family should intervene for reconciliation or separation.
