Is it permissible for a husband, Islamically, to forbid his wife from visiting her family weekly as a punishment for her?

Scholars have differed regarding the ruling on a husband preventing his wife from visiting her parents. The preponderant view is that the husband should permit his wife to visit her family to the customary extent. It is not obligatory for the husband to grant permission for a weekly visit, and there is no blame upon him for preventing it at times for disciplinary reasons or for a benefit. The husband is advised not to prevent his wife from visiting her mother, especially if she is ill. Both spouses are advised to live together in kindness, understanding, mercy, and to overlook mistakes.
