What is the ruling on smoking cigarettes in Islam? Is it an act of makrooh (discouraged) or haram (forbidden), and what is the way to get rid of this habit?

Smoking is forbidden because it is foul and leads to corruption and health and financial harms. To rid oneself of it: [one needs] strength of resolve to abandon it, sincere intention for Allah, abundant supplication and seeking forgiveness, and mindfulness and fear of Allah in private and in public.
