Is smoking cigarettes Haram (forbidden), and if so, why, and what is the evidence for it from the Qur’an?

Smoking is forbidden because it is among the impure things (al-khaba’ith), according to the Almighty’s saying: "And He makes lawful for them the good things and makes unlawful for them the impure things." It is also harmful to health and a cause of death, according to the Almighty’s saying: "And do not kill yourselves. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful." Not every forbidden thing has its prohibition explicitly mentioned in a verse or a hadith. Prohibition can be derived from general proofs, such as the prohibition of impure things (al-khaba’ith) and everything that harms a person or squanders wealth. It is sufficient for a Muslim to ask the people of knowledge and act upon their fatwa. Whoever knows Allah’s ruling must comply with it without stubbornly seeking detailed proofs or limiting them to the Quran and Sunnah alone, as legislation has other sources such as consensus (ijma’) and analogical deduction (qiyas).
