What is the origin of the contradictory displays of joy and sorrow on the Day of Ashura, and what is the guidance of Islam regarding this?

There is no authentic hadith from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, nor from his Companions, regarding the desirability of using kohl, performing ghusl, applying henna, shaking hands, cooking grains, or showing joy on the day of Ashura. All these actions are considered innovations (bid'ah). Likewise, what the other group does, such as mourning, grieving, showing thirst, lamenting, wailing, and tearing clothes, has no basis. Fabricated and false hadiths have been narrated concerning this, such as the hadith, "Whoever is generous to his family on the day of Ashura, Allah will be generous to him for the rest of the year." This is a well-known lie from the narration of Sufyan ibn Uyaynah from Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn al-Muntashir from his father, and this is considered to be an invention of the people of Kufa to counter corruption with corruption.

The killing of Husayn was a tribulation that elevated his status. This event led to the emergence of an ignorant group that takes the day of Ashura as a day of mourning and displays pre-Islamic rituals. This contradicts what Islam commanded regarding patience and seeking reward from Allah during calamity. Another group opposed them by adorning the day of Ashura with rituals of joy and happiness. Both groups are mistaken and have deviated from the Sunnah.

The Sunnah on the day of Ashura is to fast it. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, fasted it and commanded its fasting in opposition to the Jews, and he preferred fasting it along with the ninth. None of the aforementioned matters, such as grief or joy or specific rituals, were legislated for it. Everything that goes beyond fasting Ashura alone or with the ninth, such as preparing special food, renewing clothes, increasing expenses, performing a specific act of worship, using kohl, or performing ghusl, is considered a reprehensible innovation that was not legislated by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, nor by his Rightly Guided Caliphs.

The foundations of Islam are built upon worshipping none but Allah, and worshipping Him according to what He has legislated, not through innovations. The best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, and the worst of matters are their innovations, and every innovation is misguidance. So, every action that is not in accordance with the command of Allah and His Messenger is rejected.
