How can one get rid of impatience and responding with insults when provoked, even if it is just a joke?
Anger is an instinct, and a Muslim must control it and treat it with patience, forbearance, and deliberation, because patience is attained through striving for patience, and forbearance is attained through striving for forbearance. The treatment for anger is self-control, restraining the tongue, and avoiding everything that leads to agitation. When angry, one must seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan, change one's state, and perform ablution. Recall the words of Allah Almighty: "Those who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good" and the advice of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Do not get angry."
