Are music and singing forbidden at all times, including non-worship times? And is singing divided into permissible and forbidden based on the lyrics and music?

Songs that include musical instruments — other than the duff (tambourine) — are forbidden by scholarly consensus. As for the duff, there is a difference of opinion regarding its permissibility for men and its permissibility at weddings. However, songs that are devoid of musical instruments, if their lyrics are free from Islamic prohibitions and do not cause temptation or distract from the remembrance of Allah, then there is no harm in listening to them. What is forbidden is that which includes tashbeeb (erotic poetry) about women, describing their beauty, and stirring passions. The prohibition applies generally at all times.
