The answer

A husband should not prevent his wife from visiting her family if no prohibited act results from it. This is to improve their marital relationship and strengthen his ties with her in-laws, as indicated by No. 92605. Scholars have differed regarding the ruling on a husband preventing his wife from visiting her family. The preponderant opinion is that the husband should permit his wife to visit her family within what is customarily known, without specifying limits, as stated in Fatwa No. 90930. A weekly visit might be considered frequent or not, depending on people's customs. The husband is sinful if he prevents his wife in a situation where he is not permitted to prevent her, and not sinful in a situation where he is permitted to prevent her. The husband is not obliged to agree to family gatherings that were customary before marriage. It is advised that the spouses agree on these matters to avoid stubbornness and disputes, and if a dispute occurs, the court is the arbiter.
