Is it permissible for a wife to refuse praying in congregation with her husband and children at home when the mosque is directly opposite their house?

The wife must advise her husband to not abandon congregational prayer in the mosque and to not accustom their children to doing so. Some scholars consider congregational prayer obligatory, and that prayer performed without an excuse is invalid, based on the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Whoever hears the call [to prayer] and does not come, there is no prayer for him except for one with an excuse." Furthermore, missing congregational prayer deprives one of its immense reward, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Prayer in congregation is twenty-seven degrees superior to prayer performed alone," and he also said: "Whoever purifies himself in his house, then walks to one of the houses of Allah to fulfill an obligation from the obligations of Allah, one of his steps will erase a sin, and the other will raise his degree."

If the husband insists on not attending congregational prayer, he is disobedient, but his prayer is valid according to the most preponderant opinion. It is permissible to pray behind him in congregation while continuously advising him.

It is permissible for the wife to go to the mosque for congregational prayer if there is a special prayer area for women, if she is safe from temptation, and if she goes out without adornment. The husband has no right to prevent her from doing so, based on the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Do not prevent the female servants of Allah from the mosques of Allah, and let them go out unperfumed."
