Does the deceased perceive what is happening to his family in this world, and is he aware of his own death?

Scholars have differed regarding whether the dead hear what happens after them. As for the deceased, there is no disagreement that they know they have died, because they witness the angels and the unseen world, and they see their abode in Paradise or Hell. Their observations begin even before their soul departs, as stated in the hadith (definition) of Al-Bara' bin 'Azib, may Allah be pleased with him.
