Is khulʿ permissible in Islamic law, and what is its evidence from the Qur’an and Sunnah?

Khul’ (divorce at the instance of the wife) is legislated in Islam by the Qur’an and Sunnah (definition). It is permissible for a woman to seek khul’ in exchange for compensation if she dislikes her husband for a reason that prevents her from fulfilling Allah’s right in obeying him, based on His saying, the Almighty: "And if you fear that they will not keep [within] the limits of Allah, then there is no blame upon either of them concerning that by which she ransoms herself." (2:229) This is also established by the Sunnah of the Prophet, peace be upon him, in the hadith (definition) of Habibah bint Sahl and Thabit ibn Qays. Khul’ has conditions, pillars, and rulings detailed in books of jurisprudence.
