Did the Prophet (peace be upon him) fast the six days of Shawwal consecutively immediately after Eid, or intermittently throughout the month of Shawwal?

There is no mention of the specific manner in which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, fasted the six days of Shawwal. However, his encouragement to fast them is confirmed. It is preferable to fast them consecutively after the day of Eid al-Fitr to hasten to good deeds, but it is permissible to fast them separately or to delay them until later in the month. Fasting them is equivalent to fasting a lifetime, because a good deed is rewarded tenfold. Thus, fasting Ramadan (definition) is like fasting ten months, and fasting the six days of Shawwal is like fasting two months.
