The first thing a student of knowledge should focus on is the Book of Allah, both memorization and interpretation. Scholars have elaborated on this: for a young person, it is best to begin by memorizing the entire Qur'an. As for an older person, it is best to start by learning other sciences. If a man can perform his prayers with what he has memorized of the Qur'an, then he should turn to seeking knowledge, for seeking knowledge is an obligation that takes precedence over supererogatory acts. It is possible to combine both by acquiring a portion of knowledge and memorizing a part of the Qur'an.
