Which is better: memorizing the Qur'an or seeking knowledge?
Learning what Allah has commanded and forbidden must take precedence over memorizing parts of the Qur’an that are not obligatory, for the former is obligatory and the latter is supererogatory. Memorizing the Qur’an takes precedence over much of what people call “knowledge,” which is either false or of little benefit. It also takes precedence in learning for anyone who desires knowledge of the religion, both its fundamentals and its branches. A student of knowledge should begin by memorizing the Qur’an because it is the foundation of religious sciences, unlike one who busies himself with superfluous knowledge while neglecting to memorize the Qur’an. What is required from the Qur’an is to understand its meanings and act upon them.
