Memorizing the Quran is a collective obligation (fard kifaya) and a sunnah (definition) mu'akkadah (emphasized sunnah), better than supererogatory acts. Many texts have been narrated concerning its virtues and the virtue of its recitation. It is a source of elevation for the Muslim in this world and the Hereafter. Forgetting it is remedied by reviewing it and frequently reaffirming one's commitment to it. The warnings against forgetting it are due to negligence and dereliction, not illness or weak memory. Some scholars have even gone so far as to say that forgetting it is a major sin.
