Mere love and attachment of the heart are not sinful. A man's attachment to another woman and his seeking to marry her does not involve betrayal or injustice to his first wife. Indeed, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, married other women in addition to his wives. Corresponding with a girl with the intention of marrying her does not contradict the Sharia, although it is more cautious to avoid direct correspondence to prevent temptation. Allah has permitted a man to marry more than one woman, up to four, if he is able to provide for them and deal justly among them. There is no harm for a girl in accepting marriage to a married man, as the criterion for a successful marriage lies in the availability of religiosity and good character. If there is no need to marry another, then it is preferable not to marry in addition to a righteous wife. Indeed, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, refrained from marrying another woman in addition to Khadijah out of loyalty to her, and a man may be rewarded if he refrains from marrying another in order not to bring sorrow to his wife.
