Is it permissible to buy and eat chicken from general supermarkets in Germany without it being labeled "halal", given the availability of halal alternatives (more expensive and further away) sold by Turks and Arabs, and taking into account the division among Muslims in Germany regarding this issue?

It is not permissible for Muslims in countries where animals are not slaughtered according to Islamic law to eat chicken meat unless it is reliably known that the condition of Islamic slaughter has been met. The default ruling for slaughtered animals is prohibition unless their permissibility is known through Islamic slaughter performed by a Muslim or a person of the Book. The European Council for Fatwa and Research has investigated this issue and concluded that poultry and cattle are not slaughtered according to Islamic law in Western countries, and therefore, their consumption is impermissible.
