Why was the number of washes or wipes in Wudu (ablution) limited to only three times?

The washing of some ablutionary organs, such as the hands and feet, three times is among the devotional matters whose meaning is not rationally comprehensible. The wisdom behind it is to test and try the servant, and one should not delve excessively into questioning it. As for wiping the head, it is obligatory, and it is legislated to wipe it once according to the majority of scholars, as a means of alleviation. Wiping the ears is recommended according to the majority of scholars, once, and the wisdom behind wiping them is also alleviation.
