The question

What is the ruling on one who broke her fast in Ramadan due to menstruation, and then accumulated unobserved days of fasting (qadaa'), so should she combine them with the last Ramadan and make them up, or pay a sum of money, or feed the poor?

The answer

Missed fasts must be made up before the next Ramadan. If one delays making them up without a valid excuse, then they must seek forgiveness (istighfar) and make up the fasts, in addition to expiation (kaffarah) by feeding 750 grams of rice or its equivalent for each day. If the delay was due to a valid excuse, then there is no sin upon them, and they are only required to make up the fasts.

One must make up for missed fasts from two Ramadans, and pay expiation for the days of the previous Ramadan if the delay was without a valid excuse. Expiation does not suffice for fasting.
