Is it permissible to enlarge a woman's breasts and tighten a flabby face through cosmetic surgery?
There has been much inquiry about cosmetic surgeries in contemporary media, especially regarding facelifts and breast augmentation or reduction. Breast augmentation or reduction is forbidden because it is an alteration of Allah's creation for the purpose of increasing beauty and attractiveness, not for removing a deformity. A curse has been invoked upon those who do so, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Allah has cursed the tattooers and those who get tattooed, the 'namisah' (women who pluck their eyebrows), and the 'mutafallijah' (women who separate their teeth) for beauty, those who alter Allah's creation." As for facelifts to remove wrinkles, if they result from old age, they are forbidden and considered an alteration of Allah's creation. The sin increases if the motive is to deceive for marriage. However, if the wrinkles are due to pathological reasons and are clearly disfiguring, then it is permissible to remove them as a form of treatment to restore the body to its natural state. And Allah knows best.
