How many Surahs are there in the Noble Qur’an? And what is the meaning of the word "Surah"?
All praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and companions. As for what follows:
A Surah is a section of the Qur’an, no less than three verses, and it is a Qur’anic text that contains verses with a beginning and an end. It can be pronounced with or without a hamza (ء). Those who pronounce it with a hamza relate it to su'r, which is what remains of a drink in a vessel, and it is likened to the wall (sur) of a building or the wall of a city, because it encompasses its verses and brings them together. The number of Surahs in the Qur’an is mentioned in Fatwa: 31812.
