Can a brief overview of the life of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, be provided?
Allah sent Muhammad, peace be upon him, after the Children of Israel differed and distorted [their scriptures], to reveal the truth and abolish falsehood, and to guide people to the straight path. He is the seal of the prophets, and his message is for all mankind.
He, peace be upon him, was born in Mecca in the Year of the Elephant, an orphan. He was first cared for by his parents, then by his grandfather, then by his uncle. He worked as a shepherd, then as a merchant for Khadijah, whom he then married. He was known for his trustworthiness and truthfulness.
Before his prophethood, he, peace be upon him, used to worship in the Cave of Hira. When he reached forty years of age, the revelation descended upon him with "Read"; thus began his call to Islam secretly, then openly. He and his companions faced harm and persecution from Quraish, but they persevered and migrated to Abyssinia.
After the death of his uncle Abu Talib and his wife Khadijah, the harm inflicted upon the Messenger, peace be upon him, intensified. Then came the incident of Al-Isra and Al-Mi'raj (the Night Journey and Ascension). Afterwards, Allah prepared for him the Ansar (supporters) from Medina, so he migrated there and established the Islamic state, built the mosque, and forged brotherhood between the Muhajireen (emigrants) and the Ansar.
After the Islamic state became stable, Allah permitted Muslims to fight. So the Messenger, peace be upon him, and his companions engaged in several expeditions (ghazawat) against the polytheists and Jews to repel their injustice and uphold the word of Allah.
In the tenth year of the Hijra, the Messenger, peace be upon him, performed the Farewell Pilgrimage, in which he explained the fundamentals of Islam. He then passed away in Medina, leaving Islam as a complete religion.
Allah honored the Messenger, peace be upon him, with great morals, preferred him over other prophets, and commanded belief in him and following his Sunnah. Islam is indeed the religion that Allah has chosen for all mankind.
