Did earthquakes occur during the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?
It has not been authentically established through connected and sound chains of narration that Medina was struck by an earthquake during the time of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Rather, what has been reported regarding this consists of weak and mursal (lacking a companion in the chain) narrations, among them the hadith of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan and Shahr ibn Hawshab, both of whom are weak due to irsal and the weakness of the narrators. As for what was mentioned about "Indeed, your Lord seeks your repentance, so repent to Him," it was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, when Kufa trembled during his time. The correct view is that the earthquake occurred during the time of Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, who addressed the people because of it and threatened them with departure if it recurred.
